Registered Nurse – Addictions Medicine Consult Team (AMCT) – Temporary Full Time

Duties:

  1. Work in collaboration with the In-Patient, Out-Patient & Community Mental Health and Addiction teams to determine appropriate discipline to respond to initial consult request.
  2. Complete program intakes and develop/implement treatment plans with clients and families accessing services.
  3. Assess individuals to identify appropriate action for nursing interventions upon the respective unit, provide guidance to group requesting consultation.
  4. Document assessments, intervention plans, progress notes and outcomes in a timely manner as per program policy standards.
  5. Practice from a harm reduction approach and provide health teaching to clients and families on typical recovery and lifestyle issues throughout all stages of recovery when indicated.
  6. Provide guidance, training, and orientation for new staff and students.
  7. Participate in program development at a local and regional level.
  8. Facilitate a variety of education sessions locally and regionally.
  9. Maintain and adhere to policies, procedures and standards of nursing.
  10. Develop plan of care with the help of other healthcare professionals to meet patient’s needs and communicate actions to maintain continuity among the nursing team.
  11. Systematically and continuously evaluate the extent to which the individual’s health needs are being met and modify plan of care as indicated by patient’s response and condition.
  12. Provide patient and family with counselling, advise on health maintenance, and arrange for the continuation of required care after patient discharge.
  13. Attend regular in-service sessions, conferences and seminars to keep abreast of new developments, trends and techniques in the nursing field, attending more intensive sessions related to specialties as required.
  14. Participate in long-term unit goals, quality control activities and process improvement initiatives as required.
  15. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  16. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  17. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:             

  • Addiction Care and Treatment Certificate and Treatment Certificate (UBC) or equivalent.
  • Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in an addictions setting, within the last five (5) years’ is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in an acute medical setting.
  • Experience in community-based, out-patient programs.
  • Experience providing individual and group setting treatment.
  • Experience in program development and providing education.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of addictions related care (i.e. withdrawal symptoms, withdrawal management, and medication treatment available).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence based practices of recovery principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to apply harm reduction approach to recovery.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with clients who have poor distress tolerance and emotion regulation challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete addictions assessments, treatment planning, and referrals.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience providing addictions assessments with recommendations and in facilitating the development of treatment goals with clients.
  • Demonstrated program development and maintenance skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and administering educational sessions.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal relations and patient-teaching skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively make decisions, deploy critical thinking and other skills required to organize/prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated strong therapeutic communication skills and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner, considering the intended audience.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office software and Meditech.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated positive performance record and the ability to meet the job expectations and performance standards required of this position.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and patients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
