2025 Award Recipient

Dr. Vinod Mathur (posthumously)
Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Dr. Vinod Mathur had a deep curiosity for the human body and an unwavering commitment to helping others from an early age. That passion led him across the world to London, England, where he studied at the prestigious Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s from 1962 to 1967.
After beginning his medical career in the U.K., he moved to Cochrane, Ontario in 1973, embracing life in a small Northern town with optimism and grit. He later completed his urology specialization at the University of Manitoba, a field he would go on to shape and elevate in Northern Ontario. In 1982, Dr. Mathur relocated to Sault Ste. Marie, a city he would proudly call home for the rest of his life.
For 38 years, he provided exceptional and compassionate care at Sault Area Hospital. He was a trailblazer in advancing urological services in the region, introducing innovative techniques and navigating significant shortages with skill and tenacity.
In 1992, he co-founded the hospital’s Urology Clinic, a milestone that streamlined care and improved access to specialized treatment. He played a pivotal role in introducing bladder cancer chemotherapy to the clinic, ensuring patients could receive life-saving care close to home. His vision and tireless commitment helped transform the delivery of urological care across Algoma.
Beyond his clinical accomplishments, Dr. Mathur was defined by his character. He rarely missed an operating day, working with diligence, humility, and compassion. He believed in treating the whole person—not just the illness—by listening deeply, including families in care decisions, and always making time for his patients. Many remained with him for decades, drawn to his warmth, honesty, and integrity.
A lifelong learner, he also believed deeply in education. He often reminded others that “education is never free,” a reflection of his belief in hard work, gratitude, and the responsibility to learn from your mistakes. As a faculty member at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University, he mentored medical learners with generosity and patience, often inviting them into his home and life as extended family.
Dr. Mathur also gave quietly but consistently to his community, supporting local organizations like the Doctors’ Building, YMCA, Algo Club, RYTAC, Searchmont, Polish Hall, Sault Badminton Club, Tandoori Gardens, the Golf Club, and the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
Dr. Vinod Mathur served as a physician and surgeon for 55 years. He was a brilliant doctor, devoted mentor, and loving family man. His impact endures in the lives he touched and the community he helped shape. He is deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
