2021 Award Recipient

Congratulations to the 2021 Dr. William Hutchinson Award Recipient – Dr. Henry Leung!

These accomplishments and many more have improved the lives of patients and health care providers. We are fortunate to have Dr. Leung in our community…

Dr. Henry Leung has been a psychiatrist in Sault Ste. Marie for nearly 30 years. Described as a warm, non-judgmental, gracious individual, he has served as a mentor and a role model for professionalism, compassion, and empathy. It is no wonder that his patients find him easy to talk to and are so devoted to him.

Dr. Leung has always had vision. He came to Sault Ste. Marie and Sault Area Hospital in 1992 and served as the only psychiatrist serving the Algoma District. The demands were overwhelming and required far more medical professional involvement than Dr. Leung alone could provide. These pressures lead to his conception and eventual development of the Psychiatric Outreach Program in collaboration with the University of Toronto Psychiatric Outreach Program. This was the genesis of Emergency Psychiatric Services, as well as the Outpatient Clinic. This forward-thinking program development was recognized as the model for service provision to under-serviced areas in the North.

In addition to the provision of services in an under-serviced community, Henry has worked in an administrative capacity which has been key to maintaining and developing important infrastructure. He has sat on various committees and has given generously of his time to the Medical Advisory Committee, Board committees and Sub-committees, and has been both President and Vice-President of the Academy of Medicine for several terms. He has also been a member of the District Health Council Mental Health Sub-committee and the Medical Director in Psychiatry for over 8 years.

Dr. Leung was often involved in the creation of new educational venues. He was the inaugural Postgraduate Specialty Program Director for the Northeastern Ontario Medical Education Corporation. This organization was responsible for initiating postgraduate residency training for specialty residents in Northeastern Ontario. He also went on to become the Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Education in Specialty Medicine for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). In this role, he was responsible for the integration of residency training programs in Northeastern and Northwestern Ontario, and he assisted with the accreditation of new residency training programs for NOSM. Dr. Leung has encouraged and motivated many individuals to pursue a career in psychiatry.

Dr. Leung has put a great deal of energy into the development of programs that benefit the community and have allowed our city to develop a wonderfully modern psychiatric service.

These accomplishments and many more have improved the lives of patients and health care providers. We are fortunate to have Dr. Leung in our community.
