SAH is a Choosing Wisely Hospital

Choosing Wisely Canada is the national voice for reducing unnecessary tests and treatments in health care. It launched in 2014 in partnership with the Canadian Medical Association.

SAH is designated a Level 1 Choosing Wisely Hospital. Hospitals that have achieved this designation have demonstrated their commitment to reducing unnecessary tests and treatments. Unnecessary testing and treatment is a pervasive problem in health care and is present in virtually every hospital, department and clinic, irrespective of size or how diligent the clinicians are who work there.

SAH has joined the global Choosing Wisely movement by making changes to reduce overuse. Hospitals that have done so to date have made better use of resources and created more efficient processes resulting in safer and higher quality care for patients and the health care system.

SAH is a Using Blood Wisely Hospital

Using Blood Wisely is a national campaign to decrease inappropriate red blood cell transfusion practices in Canada. It is organized by Choosing Wisely Canada, in partnership with Canadian Blood Services.

SAH has been designated a Using Blood Wisely hospital. The aim of Using Blood Wisely is to mobilize hospitals across Canada to make a measureable impact on reducing inappropriate red blood cell transfusions. This involves a concerted effort to assess appropriateness against national benchmarks, as well as the adoption of evidence-based transfusion practices in its pursuit.

The Using Blood Wisely Hospital designation symbolizes a commitment to red blood cell stewardship and to the continuous pursuit of quality improvement. In achieving this designation, Sault Area Hospital is among a select group of hospitals that’s making a difference for patients, donors, and Canada’s blood supply.
