Purpose of Position:
Responsible for the procurement and documentation of laboratory specimens for the emergency department patients.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Community College courses in Phlebotomy, Venipuncture or equivalent
- Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills (e.g. teaching patients).
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
- Customer service, interpersonal and telephone skills.
- Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
- Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
- Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and operation.
- Knowledge of sterile tissue culture conditions as required by assigned area.

DUTIES:
- Collect blood and other specimens from Inpatients and Outpatients.
- Responsible for the preparation of specimens for analysis and distribution.
- Maintain blood collection area in an orderly manner.
- Assist in glass washing department or other laboratory sections as directed.
- Assist in gathering and reporting of laboratory workload statistics.
- Other duties as assigned.
