Phlebotomist- Emergency Department- Full Time

Purpose of Position:

Responsible for the procurement and documentation of laboratory specimens for the emergency department patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Grade 12 or equivalent
  2. Community College courses in Phlebotomy, Venipuncture or equivalent
  3. Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills (e.g. teaching patients).

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
  2. Customer service, interpersonal and telephone skills.
  3. Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
  4. Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  5. Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
  6. Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
  7. Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
  8. Knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and operation.
  9. Knowledge of sterile tissue culture conditions as required by assigned area.
  10. Behaviour consistent with Hospital Mission, Values and Standards of Performance.

DUTIES:

  1. Collect blood and other specimens from Inpatients and Outpatients.
  2. Responsible for the preparation of specimens for analysis and distribution.
  3. Maintain blood collection area in an orderly manner.
  4. Assist in glass washing department or other laboratory sections as directed.
  5. Assist in gathering and reporting of laboratory workload statistics.
  6. Other duties as assigned.
