Hospital Supervisor – Patient Flow – Temporary Full Time

Please Note: These positions will be scheduled to work a 24-hour rotation including weekends and statutory holidays on a rotating basis.  The shifts will be extended tours (12 hour shifts Days and Nights)

Sault Area Hospital is presently seeking highly motivated individuals for an exciting opportunity to work with engaged multidisciplinary health care teams in a constantly changing and complex environment.  Reporting to the Patient Care Manager Patient Flow, the Hospital Supervisor will be responsible for the overall Hospital operations and provision of ongoing support to front line staff after regular business hours. This would include the management of patient care activities, timely patient flow, appropriate resource allocation and the management of department specific and hospital-wide clinical and non-clinical issues.  This will be accomplished in a way that is conducive to the growth and development of staff.  The Hospital Supervisor will provide administrative and clinical leadership, with special attention to issues of high risk across the Hospital and to off-site departments, as required.

 

DUTIES:

 

  1. Support and empower staff to negotiate resolution to patient, family and health care team concerns, equitable staffing and workload issues.
  2. Collaborate daily (or more frequently as required) with the patient care unit leads/supervisors to remain aware of issues impacting bed capacity, including leading and arranging the daily bed meeting.
  3. Work with unit staff and patient registration to assign optimum bed placement for admitted patients.
  4. Working with Managers and Supervisors to facilitate inter-service transfers based on patient need.
  5. Establish effective partnerships with Physicians in facilitating the best placement of patients.
  6. Attend unit bullet rounds.
  7. Ensure urgent issues related to Occupational Health and Safety, operational risks, Workforce Planning staffing and scheduling and Infection Prevention and Control are addressed including follow-up with department Patient Care Leaders where required.
  8. Identify obstacles to optimum patient flow and bed utilization and initiate remedial interventions.
  9. Participate in emergency code responses and debrief with staff when required.
  10. Assume responsibility for the management of issues handed off by the Patient Care Leaders.
  11. Maintain a strong line of communication with appropriate Patient Care Leaders for clinical and non-clinical issues, including the provision of shift-based documentation to ensure continuity.
  12. Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of patient care and/or services, and implement improvements/changes as appropriate.
  13. Communicate regularly with other leaders to improve services and reduce expenses.
  14. Function as a professional role model demonstrating good interpersonal skills and a commitment to self-growth and development.
  15. Promote a healthy work environment in accordance with Occupation Health and Safety and Human Resource Standards.
  16. Responsible for completion of all items covered in Sault Area Hospital’s leader standard work.
  17. Ensure all work meets established quality standards.
  18. Support positive Sault Area Hospital image publicly and internally (as per Standards of Performance).
  19. Assist in development of communications strategies/plans/messaging as needed.
  20. Assume other duties as may be assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Diploma or Degree in a healthcare related field. 
  • Regulated Health Professional required, in good standing with associated regulatory body.
  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience in an acute medical or hospital setting.

 

 

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Experience leading teams and managing people in a unionized environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions, exercise sound judgement and use considerable initiative.
  • Additional coursework related to LEAN and/or various facets of management an asset.
  • Knowledge of legislation provisions which impact on work performed (i.e. Employment Standards Act; Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.)
  • Knowledge and familiarity with staff scheduling, workload measurement, budgets, labour relations and hospital operations.
  • Ability to engage and support all hospital staff in carrying out their roles and responsibilities.
  • Excellent time management with demonstrated ability to coordinate numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations.
  • Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, influence skills, patient-focused care and commitment to providing quality services.Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to be a change facilitator with a proven track record of implementing effective and sustainable change initiatives while building effective teams.
  • Demonstrated behaviour consistent with the hospital’s mission statement and core values.
