SAH Opens Dedicated Stroke Unit.

Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is excited to announce the opening of a new dedicated Stroke Unit. This specialized unit is another example of SAH’s ongoing commitment to providing outstanding care in our community and across the Algoma Region.

Dedicated Stroke Units are at the center of best practice for stroke care. When stroke patients are cared for in a dedicated stroke unit, it reduces the death rate and disability in patients by as much as 30%. Care in these units is patient-focused resulting in streamlined care, shorter hospital stays and a reduced likelihood of stroke patients requiring long-term care.

Once admitted to SAH, stroke patients will now be cared for in a specialized unit dedicated to managing their condition. This specialized focus allows the care team to deliver quality, effective and efficient care. Patients who receive their care in dedicated stroke units are more likely to survive their stroke, return home, and regain independence than those who receive conventional care.

On September 1st, SAH’s 4-bed Stroke Unit opened its doors to patients. This new unit is staffed by a committed team of professionals with specialized expertise in stroke care. The team consists of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists.
