Recreation Therapist- Bedded Levels of Rehabilitative Care Inpatient Units (2A/2B/2C)- Full Time

DUTIES:

  1. Incorporate rehabilitation philosophy, best practice standards, and evidence-based treatment strategies into the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of therapeutic recreational programming and individualized care plans.
  2. Collaborate with clients and members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to identify and access appropriate interventions.
  3. Implement therapeutic recreational programs to improve and/or prevent dysfunction.
  4. Provide leisure counseling, recreational therapy and skills development activities as required to accomplish treatment objectives.
  5. Utilize appropriate screening and assessment tools and strategies in combination with clinical interviews to match clients with the most relevant group or intervention.
  6. Develop and maintain documentation such as assessment, treatment/progress notes, care plan and daily charting in accordance with established protocols.
  7. Provide consultation to nursing staff in providing cognitive, emotional/behavioural, leisure and social interventions to clients.
  8. Document assessments, goals and patient progress.
  9. Compile and input monthly statistics.
  10. Order program equipment and/or supplies as required.
  11. Participate in studies to review data to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of the services provided.
  12. Function as a professional role model demonstrating good interpersonal skills and a commitment to self-growth and development.
  13. Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, policy and legislative requirements and implementing improvements/changes as appropriate.
  14. Participate in rounds as necessary to provide updates on patient progress and gain input from other team members.
  15. Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation or other related field.
  2. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is an asset

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum 2 years experience in a related field.
  2. Minimum 1 year experience working with geriatric populations and patients with dementia and/or cognitive impairments.
  3. Experience in a rehabilitative setting is preferred.

 ABILITY:

  1. Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
  2. Customer service, interpersonal and telephone skills.
  3. Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
  4. Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  5. Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
  6. Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.

  8. Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills (e.g. teaching patients).
  9. Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
  10. Knowledge of activity/recreation requirements and specialized equipment as appropriate to the clinical area.
  11. Knowledge of evidence based treatment modalities.
  12. Experience developing group therapy programs in a health care setting.

 

Note:  Because of the changing nature of the work and work to be done, other responsibilities and duties may by assigned and qualifications may be adjusted from time to time.
