Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci image

Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) is defined as a patient identified with laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection with Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci. Bloodstream infection is a single positive blood culture for VRE.

The VRE rate is calculated as a rate per 1,000 patient days. The “total patient days” represents the sum of the number of days during which services were provided to all inpatients during the given time period.

Cases are defined as individuals who acquired the VRE bacteria during hospitalization at Sault Area Hospital but are not displaying signs of infection or may have infections that are not in the bloodstream.

The rate is calculated as follows:
Number of new hospital-acquired VRE cases in our facility X 1000
Total number of patient days (for one month)
