August 30, 2021 – The Board of Directors of Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ila Watson, our new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
Ila first joined SAH in 2009 as Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Her portfolio expanded to include leadership of Strategic Planning, Communications, Transformation, Enterprise Risk and Volunteer Resources. She has also provided leadership in various clinical areas. Ila served SAH as the Interim President and CEO during 2018-19.
Originally from Brockville, Ontario, Ila has enjoyed living in Sault Ste. Marie for over 30 years. Prior to moving to health care, Ila had a successful 20-year career in various leadership roles in the Ontario Public Service in both Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto. Dedicated to service, Ila has been a member of various boards, including Superior Family Health Team, the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission and currently with PUC Inc. and PUC Services. Ila is the Co-Chair of the Canadian College of Health Leaders’ Chapter Advisor Council and Chair of its NEON Lights Chapter. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in Industrial Relations.

As we work to finalize our next Strategic Plan, we are confident we have the right leadership to ensure the hospital will be a strong partner to meet the needs of those we serve,” said Sharon Kirkpatrick, SAH Board Chair.
“I am privileged to serve Algoma in the capacity of President & CEO of SAH. I am committed to our vision of outstanding care and ensuring the hospital will continue to be an active health and community partner. Through the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have learned many lessons on what is possible through collaboration and innovation. During the last 18 months, the Pandemic has highlighted the talents of our resilient health care workers and our incredibly supportive community. I look forward to our continued work together in the future,” expressed Ila Watson, President and CEO, Sault Area Hospital.
