- Featuring Dr. Mai Ahmed and Dr. Mohamed Abbasy
We are pleased to welcome Psychiatrist, Dr. Mai Ahmed and her husband, Emergency Specialist, Dr. Mohamed Abbasy, to Sault Ste. Marie and Sault Area Hospital. Both were born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt.
Dr. Ahmed completed her residency in Qatar and received her board certification in Psychiatry through the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the United Kingdom. She came to Canada 4 years ago and has practiced outpatient psychiatry at Grand River Hospital for the last year. They decided to move to Sault Ste. Marie and make this community their home. “We have friends here and we heard amazing reviews about this community and SAH,” she says. “Coming from a coastal town in Egypt, the Sault feels like home already. The people are friendly and the SAH team is collaborative and supportive.” Dr. Ahmed is as assistant professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and hopes to introduce mentorship program in collaboration with NOSM to provide skills and training to family physicians.
Dr. Abbasy is an Emergency Room Physician who completed his residency in Egypt. He holds three Board certifications in Emergency Medicine – Egyptian Board of Emergency Medicine, Royal College of Emergency Medicine United Kingdom, and European Board Examination in Emergency Medicine. Upon moving to Canada, Dr. Abbasy pursued a sub-specialty at McMaster University in Emergency Ultrasound. He then worked in the Niagara region for 2 years before joining the Northern Ontario School of Medicine as an assistant professor and SAH’s Emergency Department. “I am the Emergency ultrasound lead for the department and my goal is to introduce an educational program to increase the use of bedside ultrasounds for the diagnosis of acute medical conditions,” he explains. “I like the support from everyone at SAH – it’s an amazing team.”
Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Abbasy have 3 young boys ages 1, 9 and 12. Their family is enjoying Sault Ste. Marie and playing soccer. “The most precious thing in life is time spent with family,” adds Dr. Ahmed.
We welcome Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Abbasy and their family to our community!
