The laboratory is staffed with pathologists, medical laboratory technologists (MLT), Medical Laboratory Assistants, Pathology Assistants, phlebotomists and clerical personnel. The laboratory at Sault Area Hospital is licensed by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to perform general and specialized tests in the following categories:
- Chemistry: (eg blood sugars, PSA)
- Pathology: (diagnosis of surgical specimens, autopsies)
- Cytology: (specifically looks for cancer cells eg sputum)
- Hematology: (hemoglobin, measuring clotting factors)
- Microbiology: (the culturing of bacteria, identifying them and providing the name of antibiotics that will be effective)
- Transfusion Medicine: (the issuing of compatible blood and blood products)

Note: Certain tests are not considered a benefit under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). These tests will be billed directly to the patient and may be covered by private insurers.
