Seniors Mental Health

Seniors’ Mental Health Services (SMHS) provides community mental health services for older adults within the District of Algoma. The Service addresses mental health issues that may be affecting independence, activities of daily living, safety and relationships.

Seniors’ Mental Health Service strives to provide specialized mental health assessment and recommendations. The service may connect patients with a geriatric psychiatrist for further diagnosis when available and necessary.

Treatment is provided by a multi-disciplinary team. Our team is comprised of:

  • Geriatric Psychiatrists
  • Registered Nurses
  • Social Worker
  • Occupational Therapist

The Seniors’ Mental Health team collaborates with community agencies and health care workers to provide services to older individuals with complex mental health needs. Services may be provided at the office or in a patient’s home.

Seniors’ Mental Health patients should be 65 years old and older or are believed to have an early onset neurocognitive disorder. Patients are usually struggling with severe mental illness, neurological disorder, addiction or dementia that significantly impacts their quality of life.

Referrals to the Seniors’ Mental Health Service can be made by anyone. Referrals are accepted by phone or fax.

Geriatric Psychiatry referrals must be made by a nurse practitioner or physician.

The following information is needed when making a referral:

  • Reason for referral (description of situation, when it started and how severe the symptoms are)
  • Past medical and psychiatric history
  • Current medication list

Seniors’ Mental Health Services provides telephone consultation with a clinician Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 4:00 p.m.
