Quotes from Our Leadership

“Healthcare continues to face growing complexity and change, but what gives me confidence is the dedication, resilience, and professionalism I see across our organization every day. Throughout the past year, our staff, physicians, volunteers, leaders, and Board members have remained focused on what matters most—providing high-quality care for patients and families. We are proud of what has been achieved and remain committed to supporting the hospital as it continues to evolve, improve, and serve our community.”

Mark Lepore, Board Chair

“What has never been uncertain, even during the most challenging times, is the commitment of the people of Sault Area Hospital. Because of our staff, physicians, volunteers, leaders, and partners, we have continued to adapt, innovate, and move forward. It has been an honour to serve alongside them, and I leave knowing this organization is well-positioned to continue delivering exceptional care for the people of Algoma.”

Ila Watson, President and CEO

“The strength of our hospital is reflected in the dedication of our physicians, leaders, and care teams, who work together every day to deliver high-quality, safe, and compassionate care for patients and families across our region. Through a shared commitment to quality, patient safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement, we are building a stronger foundation for the future of healthcare in Algoma.”

Dr. John Heintzman, Chief of Staff

The AM was highlighted by the presentation of the SAH iCcare Awards, established by the Board in 2011 to recognize an employee, a volunteer, and a physician who consistently demonstrate Sault Area Hospital’s iCcare values: Integrity, Compassion, Collaboration & Partnership, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. These awards celebrate individuals whose actions and commitment reflect the values that guide care and service at SAH.

The 2026 recipients are Robin Dechamplain (Employee), Dr. MacKenzie Ludgate (Physician), and Patti-Jo Duggan (Volunteer).

The meeting concluded with the presentation of the prestigious Dr. William Hutchinson Award. Established in 1982 and presented annually by the SAH Board of Directors, the award recognizes distinguished contributions to health services in Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma. Named in honour of Dr. William Hutchinson, an esteemed local surgeon and founding member of the Algoma District Health Council, it recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on healthcare in our region.

The 2026 recipient is Dr. Jonathan DellaVedova.

SAH extends congratulations to all award recipients and recognizes their outstanding contributions to patient care, service excellence, and the well-being of the residents of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma region.

SAH congratulates all award recipients for their dedicated service to the residents of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma region.
