Seniors Mental Health Services (SMHS) provides community mental health services for older adults within the District of Algoma. The Service addresses mental health issues that may be affecting independence, activities of daily living, safety and relationships.
Seniors Mental Health Service strives to provide specialized mental health assessment and recommendations. The Service has the ability to connect patients with a geriatric psychiatrist for diagnosis when necessary.
Treatment is provided by a multi-disciplinary team. Our team is comprised of:
- Geriatric Psychiatrists
- Registered Nurses
- Social Worker
- Occupational Therapist
The Seniors Mental Health team collaborates with community agencies and health care workers to provide services to older individuals with complex mental health needs. Services may be provided at the office or in a patient’s home.
Seniors Mental Health patients should be 65 years old or older. Patients are usually struggling with severe mental illness, neurological disorder, addiction or dementia that significantly impacts their quality of life.
Referrals to the Seniors Mental Health Service can be made by anyone. Referrals are accepted by phone or fax. Referrals for Geriatric Psychiatry must be made by a nurse practitioner or physician.
The following information is needed when making a referral:
- Reason for referral (description of situation, when it started and how severe the symptoms are)
- Past medical and psychiatric history
- Current medication list
- Recent medical tests to rule out physical causes of symptoms
Seniors Mental Health Services provides urgent telephone consultation Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 4:00pm.
