Congratulations to Dr. Darren Costain, Orthopedic Surgeon on receiving the Sault Ste. Marie Academic Medical Association (SSM AMA) 2025 Excellence in Local Medical Education Award.

This prestigious award is presented annually to a member who has made a significant contribution to medical education within the Sault Ste. Marie community. Dr. Costain has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the development of medical students, family medicine residents, and other specialists.

Known for his consistent excellence as a preceptor in the Orthopedic Department, Dr. Costain plays a key role in the development of procedural skills, including hands-on instruction in casting and other essential techniques for medical learners.

A hallmark of Dr. Costain’s teaching approach is his commitment to continuous improvement. He regularly seeks feedback from learners to refine his teaching methods. A key contributor to Dr. Costain’s nomination was a learner who praised his dedication, stating, “I have never experienced an orthopedic surgeon dedicate as much of his own personal time to teaching. Dr. Costain is always keen to teach with regards to any procedural skills and orthopedic principles. He takes the time to teach even when there is no formal expectation of him to do so, and as a learner, it is greatly appreciated.”

In addition to his clinical teaching, Dr. Costain is highly involved in research, particularly in engaging medical students and other learners in local research projects.
