PURPOSE OF POSITION:<\/b><\/p>

To perform the full scope of pathologist assistant practice (surgical pathology and autopsy pathology) under the direction and supervision of medically qualified pathologists.<\/p>

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

  • Perform high-quality macroscopic (gross) examination and dissection of simple to complex surgical pathology specimens and the related tasks arising within this scope of practice.<\/li>
  • Perform high-quality postmortem examinations across the full-scope of hospital and medical-legal\/forensic autopsies with the pathologist and the related tasks arising within this scope of practice. This occurs in the setting of a hospital-based regional forensic pathology unit under the medical direction of a forensic pathologist.<\/li>
  • Daily coordination of position activities with pathologists, histology staff\/senior, and laboratory management.<\/li>
  • On-going self-directed continuing education.<\/li>
  • Contribute to the enrichment of the laboratory medicine program in the course of this position.<\/li>
  • Maintenance of the surgical and autopsy pathology work areas.<\/li>
  • Compliance with organizational protocols.<\/li>

    QUALIFICATIONS:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>

    • Master\u2019s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists\u2019 Assistant program; or,<\/li>
    • Recent experience as a surgical and autopsy pathologist assistant subject to Laboratory Medical Director approval.<\/li>
    • Certified or in process of certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists\u2019 Assistants [PA(CCCPA-CCCAP)] and\/or American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification [PA(ASCP)] is preferred.<\/li><\/ul>

      KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:<\/strong><\/p>

      • Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and independently.<\/li>
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work sensitively and perform calmly and professionally under pressure in both hospital and medical-legal environments.<\/li>
      • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive service outcomes.<\/li>
      • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills.<\/li>
      • Computer knowledge and skills (e.g. Meditech, EPIC\/Beaker, ConnectingOntario, speech recognition software – Dragon dictation, Microsoft environment).<\/li>
      • Must be able to sit and stand and perform mentally and physically demanding tasks for extended periods.<\/li>
      • Ability to work Days- Monday to Friday, any exceptions on an agreed basis.<\/li>
      • Ability to work in environments with exposure to hazardous chemicals, sharp\/pointed instruments, and human specimens and bodies.<\/li><\/ul>
