Registered Nurse- Endoscopy- Temporary Part Time

Purpose:

The Registered Nurse in the Endoscopy Unit assists the physician to perform specific diagnostic or treatment endoscopic procedures within a controlled environment. 

Duties:

  1. Provide nursing care in accordance with the College of Nurses, organizational and department standards.
  2. Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of care to patients who undergo a gastroenterological endoscopic procedure including physical assessment, review of health and medication history, and teaching or provision of instruction to patient.
  3. Assist the physician with the procedure including preparation of specific drug therapy, endoscope and equipment / supplies required for each individual patient, in Endoscopy and where procedures are performed in alternate departments (ICU, Diagnostic Imaging).
  4. Assess patient status and address care needs during the post procedure recovery phase, escalating to the physician should complications arise.
  5. Provide appropriate post procedure and follow up instructions / education to the patient and family member/responsible person accompanying client upon discharge from the department.
  6. Ensure that equipment and supplies required to provide services is available and in working order, including regular inspection of equipment, communicating need for maintenance of all endoscopes and accessories.
  7. Coordinate follow-up care such as additional diagnostic testing, physician’s appointments.
  8. Responsible for making clinical decisions, exercising judgment to ensure best possible nursing care is provided within available resources.
  9. Is cognizant of and participates in the development of the Nursing and Unit objectives.
  10. Is compliant with legislation, organizational/departmental, regulations, standards and procedures related to occupational health and safety.

Qualifications:            

  • Certificate of Competency in Ontario required.
  • Demonstrated competency with BCLS, preferred.
  • ACLS required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years current experience with care of patients in a surgical or critical care setting, including care of patients receiving moderate sedation, competency with IV therapy (including central lines), and assisting with invasive procedures required.

Ability:

  • Demonstrated ability to function efficiently in a fast paced clinical setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, work independently as well as successfully with a team; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, courteous and reassuring manner, in person and on the telephone.
