Personal Support Worker – Temporary Part Time (2) Medical 3B

Duties:

  1. Effectively uses the Standards of Nursing Practice and the Nursing Process in assisting in the planning of care for patient.
  2. Provides the essential care needs of each patient, bathing, grooming, positioning, toileting, mobility, nutrition, ambulation, care of the patient’s personal environment and other care needs as indicated by the care plan.
  3. Contributes to the psycho-social needs of patients by assisting them in programs and activities; encouraging and promoting independence; encouraging participation in programs designed to meet physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual and social needs; respecting a patients’ personal property.
  4. Assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of a patient.
  5. Ensures that the patient’s environment is kept orderly and clean.
  6. Contributes to the efficient and competent management of the unit by attending and participating in patient rounds; reporting accurately observations made on patients to the nurse; recording on appropriate work sheets; answering phone and taking messages; attending scheduled in-service sessions; accounting to the nurse the whereabouts of all patients in his/her care.
  7. Provides constant care to appropriate patients.
  8. Is compliant with legislative, organizational and departmental regulations, standards and procedures related to occupational health and safety.

Qualifications:             

  • Personal Support Worker certification from an approved college program.
  • Competence in BCLS.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of patient care requirements and equipment specific to the clinical area

Ability:

  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including extended standing, walking, lifting and climbing using proper technique.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of nursing staff to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, tact, courtesy and alertness in public contacts.
  • Demonstrated behaviour consistent with the hospital’s mission statement and core values.
